About the Harlem Globetrotters
The Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team which began in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. The team was the brain child of Abe Saperstein and adopted the name Harlem because of the team wanted to convey an association with New York and the large Harlem African American community.
The Harlem Globetrotters have played over 20,000 exhibition games in 118 countries, scoring over 20,000 victories, with only 332 losses. The Harlem Globetrotters have played more games than other team in the history of sports.
Many Globetrotters were also NBA greats. Today there are at least three different Harlem Globetrotters teams touring the world. The Harlem Globetrotters were finally inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. In an effort to gain back some of their serious ball playing reputation, the Globetrotters have scheduled games against college teams and teams like Magic Johnson's All Stars.
The whistled version of Sweet Georgia Brown is the Globetrotters iconic song and is still played at games to this day.
